anxiety children causes

A question for children of military personnel?

I’ve struggled with severe emotional issues and have been slowly working through them in therapy. I’m interested in understanding what caused them. I have a plethora of potential causes to choose from and I often focus on my Marine Corps upbringing. I hypothesize many factors that could have directly and indirectly affected me and I wonder if other military kids have been similarly affected.

I think my dad being sent away on military maneuvers for periods of six months to a year drove a big wedge between us that messed up our relationship. Then there is moving every one to three years. I lived in five different towns by the time I was ten. Also, my dad was emotionally damaged by the Vietnam War which I believe made him distant.

I believe a combination of these factors (and others not mentioned) caused a lack of self confidence, social anxiety, depression, and more. Any other military children have a similar experience and should the military change?

Please, no mean answers,

I’ve had some experiences with my father that I believe were a direct link to what he experienced while enlisted. We lived in Germany for three years. During that time, he would come home and order inspections of our rooms and other crazy inappropriate demands that shouldn’t have been subjected to such young children. Now at almost 80 years old, he actually apologizes for his behavior back then.

With regards to moving all over, there are friends that I sought years after moving back to the states but never found them. Especially while in Germany. Its as if those three years were just a distant dream.

Since there is a lot of misunderstanding in regards to panic attacks, I’d like to start by asking you a few simple questions. Have you ever ended up in ER because you thought you were having a heart attack, and after they check you out they told you it was an anxiety attack? Maybe you have thoughts that your breathing will stop because your chest feels tight? Have you ever taken a drive and been pressed down with the fear that you’ll get stuck in traffic on top of a bridge (or under one)? Ever thought you were going to lose control and go crazy? Do you find yourself getting on edge and feeling nervous in situations that used to have no effect on you? If you experience any of these feelings, you could be suffering from anxiety.
